5 a day... We have all heard the saying, but what's this all about?
Well, its the recommended number of portions of Fruit and Vegetables we should all aim to consume.
What counts as a portion though?
Usually about a handful... so, one apple is a portion; one banana is also a portion; a pepper is a portion too; half an avocado is one portion; and even a small glass of fruit juice can count as one portion.
Its important to make sure that the 5 a day are 5 different portions though, made up of both fruit and vegetables. This means that you will have a much more varied intake of important nutrients, all really important for your health, energy and even things like how healthy your skin and nails look!
More importantly fruit and veg often taste great and can add real flavour to any meal or snack without adding too many calories!
